Childcare Volunteer for HealthFinders Collaborative (2 evenings/month in Dundas)

Job: Childcare Volunteer

Job Description: Provide a safe environment for children while their parents attend clinic appointments and classes at HealthFinders. Volunteers are also invited to develop and carry out age-appropriate activities targeted towards health promotion. The church (Little Prairie United Methodist Church) where HealthFinders holds classes and clinic nights has a childcare area with toys and places to work on crafts and other projects. Parents of children are on site at all times.

Qualifications:

High school or college student
Ability to work independently
Ability to work and communicate (creatively!) with parents and children who do not speak English and are from diverse ethnic backgrounds
Comfortable working with children of all ages (2 – 16)
Ability to be flexible and responsive to month-by-month needs of the clinic
Ability to arrange own transportation to clinic site
Demonstrated ability to commit to volunteer duty.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Maintaining a safe environment for children
Creating and carrying out activities for pre-school and school-age children oriented towards promoting healthy lifestyles
Caring for children from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. or until last child goes home
Cleaning up childcare area after children leave

Commitment:
The volunteer will commit to one semester’s worth (Fall, Spring and/or Summer) of diabetes class nights (2 evenings/month; usually the third Thursday and fourth Tuesday). There is also the opportunity to provide childcare on other evenings if multiple volunteers are interested.
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. Priority will be given to volunteers who can commit to both clinic nights. Please email your resume and/or a description of your background to carroll.emily@healthfindersmn.org.

Volunteer Opportunity with Rural Enterprise Center

Help needed for the construction of a chicken coop to be used by Latino families starting a business in free-range chicken production. Work day planned for Friday, March 9 (anytime between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.) and Saturday, March 10 (9 a.m. til noon). Approx. 8 volunteers needed each day to help with construction. Please bring a drill/driver if have one to apply metal siding.

English to Spanish translation of a Spay /Neuter Letter

I am helping to organize a spay/neuter clinic for lower income pet owners (and also to help sterilize feral cats in this same neighborhoods). I have a set of instructions for pet owners that I need translated from English to Spanish. It is just one page but is pretty comprehensive.

We also may need volunteers to assist us in spreading the word in a couple specific apartment home and mobile home parks. I will post more about that when we have an exact date for the clinic. Feel free to contact me if you are interested in helping.

Pet Therapy Volunteers Needed

Pet Therapy is bringing your dog to facilities to visit those who do not have access to pets, and letting them enjoy the companionship. Dogs must first earn their Canine Good Citizen Certificates to become Pet Therapy Volunteers, along with their handlers.

Habitat for Humanity Needs a Bookkeeper!

Rice County Habitat for Humanity is a ministry that builds simple, decent, affordable homes for those in need in our community. We are building four homes in Rice County in 2011 and they’re all under construction. We’ve got one in Morristown, one in Faribault and two in Northfield.

We are currently looking for a volunteer that has experience in bookkeeping (we use Quickbooks). This volunteer opportunity will take about five hours a week at our office in Lonsdale. This volunteer will work closely with our Treasurer, Construction Coordinator and Executive Director. This volunteer will be trained by our current Treasurer and members of our Finance Committee.

Northfield Kids need your help!

Northfield’s low-income students have trailed their peers in average reading and math proficiency by more than 25% over the last 5 years. And this group is growing: almost 1/3 of Northfield’s elementary students now receive free or reduced-price lunches– a 50% increase since 2004.

We need YOU to help close this gap and prepare all Northfield students for success. Research shows that mastering reading by 3rd grade is key to lifelong success.

Northfield elementary schools are starting a new volunteer program to close the achievement gap and we need YOU. Help all our kids launch for a life as learning superheroes!

3 ways you can help:

Northfield elementary schools are expanding three types of volunteer support:
1. intensive one-on-one tutoring – 30 minutes 3-5 times per week
2. read aloud – listen to kids read – 30-60 minutes 1-3 times per week
3. enrichment challenge – help students who need an extra challenge so teachers can focus on those in the gap – 60 minutes per week for at least four weeks
We also need adults to serve as mentors to youth and for periodic help with testing and assessment.
